Specialist guidance

Whether you sell your products at craft fairs, in a physical shop or online, it's important to make sure you're covered if a claim is made against you or your business.

A customer could be hurt by a product that you have made and sold to them. Alternatively, a customer or passer by could be injured by your stall during an event, or an employee could suffer an injury caused by working for you.

Public liability insurance for crafters

Protect your business against claims made if your business activities have caused an injury or property damage.

For example, a visitor to your business premises trips and injures themselves, or your stock falls during a craft fair and damages the carpet.

Public liability claims can arise from a number of situations. It's important to have cover in place so that you and your business are protected should an accident happen.

At Clear, we offer Public liability cover up to £5 million for any one event.

Product liability insurance for crafters

Product liability insurance can protect you against the cost of compensation for:

  • Personal injury caused by a faulty product
  • Loss of or damage to property caused by your faulty product
  • Unforeseeable circumstances such as product faults that your quality control system failed to identify

At Clear, we offer up to £5 million of Product liability cover for any one period of insurance – which includes sales to the US and Canada.

Employers’ liability insurance for crafters

If your craft business has employees, you're legally required to have an Employers’ liability insurance policy in place.

This can protect your business against legal and compensation expenses from claims made by your employees. For instance, if an employee slips on a wet floor and injures themselves, they could make a claim against your business.

Most businesses in the UK are required to have at least £5 million of Employers’ liability cover; at Clear we provide up to £10 million of cover to craft businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need Public Liability insurance for my craft business?

If you cause injury to another person or cause damage to their property, then they may make a claim against you for compensation. Public Liability insurance will cover you for any compensation award made against you plus the legal fees to defend you.

What about if I make and sell a product and it turns out to be faulty?

Our craftworkers insurance includes cover for Products Liability, which will protect you for claims made against you resulting from the sale of faulty products.

Why do I need Employer’s Liability insurance?

If you employ someone to work for you then by law, you must take out Employer’s Liability insurance. Failure to have adequate cover in force could result in your business being fined. For further details about Employer’s Liability insurance being legally required, please refer to the UK Government website (note that Clear is not responsible for the content of external websites):

Can I include insurance cover for the tools and materials I use?

Yes, you can include cover for Business Property when you request the quote online, which can include any tools or materials you use for your business. What you must be sure to do is select the right replacement value for your Business Property when you run through the quote, otherwise you may end up being underinsured and this will affect the payment of any claim by the insurer.

How can I get a quote for my craftworker business?

Simply click on the Get a quote now button above/below and enter your details along with the level of insurance you need. Once the quote is displayed, read the important information documents  provided and then decide if it’s the right policy for you.
