The Employment Rights Bill is still bouncing between the House of Lords and the Commons, with key proposals such as unfair dismissal, zero-hours contracts, and trade union rules sparking ongoing debate. Until both Houses agree, the Bill can’t move to Royal Assent. In this update, we highlight the unresolved issues, recent NMW enforcement, upcoming consultations, and how you can get involved.
The Employment Rights Bill, set to be implemented between 2025 and 2027, will significantly change the legal framework for workplaces in the UK. Key reforms include flexible working from day one, extended statutory sick pay, enhanced rights for trade unions and collective bargaining, as well as new protections for equality and fairness. These changes will require employers to review their contracts, policies, and daily HR processes to ensure compliance.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is stepping up efforts to protect workers and modernise safety rules. Inspectors are now visiting garages and body shops to assess controls for isocyanate exposure, a leading cause of occupational asthma. Meanwhile, the HSE is reviewing Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) to reduce red tape and align safety standards with today’s industry practices.
